Henry started Kindergarten today!
I've thought about this day for a long time.
I thought it would be huge!
I thought I would cry.
I thought my child would grab on to my leg and never let go.
I thought I would have motherhood all figured out after 5 years.
Well, I was wrong.
It was pretty anti-climactic.
No tears.
No leg-grabbing.
I'm still just a "new mom" or so I feel like it.
Daddy stayed home and made Henry breakfast,
which he hardly ate.
Henry posed for pictures on the porch.
We all hopped into the van and took Henry over to school.
Mom walked him to the door.
Henry couldn't wait to get inside.
His teacher, Miss Susanna, came for him and the others.
She told them to wave goodbye to Mommy and Daddy.
Henry turned and yelled "I love you" and blew me a kiss (melted my heart).
But Mommy insisted on following her new little student in.
He tried out the table.
Then made his way over to the rug, and found some friends...
I left.
Happy that he was happy and comfortable.
Nervous that he might get hungry.
Relieved that he and James couldn't fight for 3 hours.
Motivated to spend some one-on-one time with him when he got home.
The 3 hours flew by, and we returned to pick the big boy up.
He was HUNGRY, of course.
He had fun, but didn't meet any friends because he
"couldn't read their names" (on their nametags),
and the playground was "too hard" for him to play on
(climbing devices and swinging on rungs).
I told him that tomorrow he should
eat more breakfast,
ask some kids their names
and go for the slide on the playground.
He told me over our cookie-making session this afternoon
that he wants to go back tomorrow.
We did it, and I think it will be a great year!

You are so brave Henry!! You looks so grownup, whatsup with the teacher not having to wear the uni's?
I am jealous he gets to wear uniforms. Kindergarten wasn't sad for me, felt like preschool everyday. I am nervous for Ben to start 1st grade tomorrow. Having him gone the whole day is going to be weird.
Sounds like Henry did awesome (and mom too!)
Great job, Henry! Is it a private school or do the public schools wear uniforms?
Henry looks so grown up and I love the uniforms. I wish Ella's school did uniforms too. Is K only a half day there? Ella goes a full day, it is going to be so strange having her gone all day, every day!
Yea for a great first day! And good job to you for holding it together!! You're better than me!!
Awww, that's me in 8 days. What a beautiful post. :)
Yes, Kindergarten is only 1/2 day. I'm SURE there would have been tears for a 7 hour day! We'll save the sobs for 1st grade, I guess.
Katie- He goes to our neighborhood charter school, still public not private. And yes, I do like the uniforms...makes fewer decisions for me! :)
