Bad Medicine

James woke up on Sunday morning with a swollen, red, pussy bug bite on his thumb, or so I thought. We spent the morning at home then headed to church. During the sacrament I had to take James out in the hall for being noisy and a few people commented on how red he looked. I thought he was sunburned from the previous day outside, but as I looked under his shirt I realized his entire body was bright red. After a few friends' promptings I left church and took James to the Insta-Care. I thought for sure the doctor was going to tell me that he had an allergic reaction to a spider bite and to give him Benadryl. Well, she took one look at it and told me that it was an abscess. They had to lance it (he didn't even cry). The doctor went on to explain that James had either a Strep Infection or a Staph Infection that led to SCARLET FEVER (is that still around?)!!!! They had to give him Tylenol, 2 antibiotic shots (1 per leg) and sent us home with 2 more antibiotics to take daily for 10 days. We should be getting the cultures back today or tomorrow to see what was really inside that pussy mess. I'm thinking that he had a cut on his thumb, sucked his thumb while he slept, and all of the germies in his mouth got in the cut and it became infected. That's just my guess, though.

Anyways, I'm in shock that I, Miss Worry-Wart, herself, brushed off my poor baby's symptoms, and now he's stuck with a serious infection and Scarlet Fever. Honestly!? What was I thinking? I guess I know that my mother's intuition that constantly worries is a good thing from time to time when it tells me when to take my kid to the doctor.

In the meantime James is being a trooper. It doesn't seem to bother him at all. He just hates the meds, and I'm praying we are getting 1/2 of what he's supposed to even take consumed. People keep telling me "Oh, my baby loved his meds....they were so sweet, he would suck them right down and want more." Well, my kid is no stranger to sugar. He is stranger to sugar-coated medicine, which he knows isn't near as good.

Poor little guy! I can't believe how red he got. Scarlet fever seems so olden days- but all it takes is a bad bacterial infection. Poor kid. Good luck with the medicine taking. I've tried it all. Johnny will take his but well, I've had to hold the other two down physically at other times in their lives. Yeesh.

P.S. I've been meaning to mention on a random side note- Dan McCreary was the dude who came and got the hummer. He is the drunk guy, right?

Wow! He does look red in that picture! Poor little guy! All I can say is that he is really tough! On Saturday he didn't even act like that bug bite thing even bothered him. And then it turned out to be an infection and Scarlet Fever! He is amazing!!!

Poor James? Is that chocolate on his face or is that from the "fever?"

That is crazy! Do you get scarlet fever from infections? Poor little lamb. I hate having to give Indie medicine, she hates it too so good luck with that.

Yep, scarlet fever is still around. I had it when I was a kid. It's awful! That is why I am such a freak about getting strep infections (I got it from strep throat) treated ASAP.
