Allie called us on Friday to see if we wanted to go on a letterboxing adventure. I had no idea what she was talking about, but ended up tagging along and loving it. Here's some background: People all over the US have made up little boxes filled with a notebook, a pen and a stamp, and hid them in their local towns. They put the clues to the box's whereabouts on this site, and then kids can go on a discovery hunt for the box. Each kid takes their own stamp and notebook with them. Once they find the box they put their stamp print in the box's notebook and print their name next to it to leave in the box as a record to all who have visited. Then, they print the stamp from the box in their personal notebook to take home. It's like having a letterbox passport to show you all of the places you have been. Our two hunts on Friday morning took us on a hike in the mountains (we had to pull out a rock in the rock wall to reveal the hidden box) and a walk through a park. The kids loved it, and I even found it quite thrilling. It's free and fun! If there aren't any letterboxes listed in your area then you can place them yourself and put the clues on the internet for others to find!
Happy hunting!

love love love this idea.
Oh man! If I wasn't 9 mo pregnant I would totally snag my niece this weekend and go for a hunt - this sounds awesome! I shared your blog with some friends of mine who I think would love doing this with thier families - thanks for sharing this on your blog!
That looks like so much fun!
were heading to pillsbury, anyone want to come?
I learned about this about two years ago here in Las Vegas, our friends do it all the time. It's called Geo hunting here. A lot of the boxes have cool little gifts in them, like a silver dollar, or toy, or something. Then you have to leave something in the box. The best prize anyone found out here was a $50 Gift Card to Target.
I have read about this a few times but never tried it. It looks like so much fun. I am up for anything that is free!
That is so neat....I need to check out our area!
That is SO cool, and I just within the last few weeks heard about Letterboxing. Luckily there are a couple locations not far from me that seem to have some... I might need to check that out! :)
