self soother

Ever since Henry's pediatrician told me when he was 4 days old that he had "a love for sucking", and ever since he wanted to nurse around the clock, I have been a big fan of pacifiers. I never wanted my babies to have them before I had babies. But once you become a mom, face reality, and throw some of your crazy notions out the window, you realize that you have to pick your battles. I refused to offer my milkers 24/7 or to stick my filthy finger in his mouth when we were out and about and he wanted to fulfill his desire to suck, so the pacifier was born. It has been a lifesaver with Henry and continues to be (I'm slightly ashamed at saying that, but hey, you pick your battles right?). He sleeps amazing thanks to the 3 pacis to comfort and cuddle him all night long.

When little James made his appearance I immediately began forcing the pacifier. Some moms say, "My baby would never take a pacifier". Well, mine didn't willingly either. They'd cry, I'd shove. and keep shoving. Until they grew to love it. Now James will take it periodically, but I've found he doesn't really need it.

I was happy to find that he's discovered his thumb....Isn't this just the cutest sight you ever did see?I think I've got myself a thumbsucker. I love that you never have to remember his thumb when you leave the house. You never have to replace his thumb in the middle of the night when it falls off. You never have to suck his thumb yourself to disinfect it when it falls on the floor in the mall. You never have to hunt the local drugstore for just the right color of thumb to suit his personality. You never have to sheepishly reveal that he still has a thumb when he's almost 3. And if one thumb ever goes down, he's always got the other one not too far away.

I guess the bad thing is, you can't just take his thumb, toss it in the toilet, and tell him to wave it goodbye. It will be accompanying him to Kindergarten (as I hope the paci will not be), I just pray it's gripping his pencil and not stuffed in his mouth. It just won't be near as cute then.

My co-worker's 3 year old has rubbed her nose raw because she sucks her thumb and rubs the tip of her nose at the same time. They currently put a bandaid on her thumb to try to break the habit!

That is a very cute sight. I love those pretty blue eyes, they have such a clear color for being so young. I was always told you wouldn't know the true color of eyes till babies were 1 or 2.

Our second wasn't interested in his thumb or a pacifier, it's kind of strange. He'll chew on his fingers once or twice a week, but I think it's just because he's bored. I'm so glad too, because getting our first to stop sucking her thumb was really traumatic.

I think he and Jude are long lost brothers.

Thank you for staulking me so now I can staulk you! It's fun to see you and Preston and your little guys. They are so cute! Wow, James has amazing eyes. I have a thumb sucker myself and I love it! Now that she's two and her bite is opening up, I'm a little worried with how to take it away. We're really hoping not to have to cut her thumb off, but at least she has two. j/k We may be purchasing a thumb guard after awhile. Anyway it's great to touch base with you again. You guys look great.
